And then I realized that there was nothing I could do which felt safe. And I made a picture of it in my head …

And then I imagined crossing out all the possibilities which were impossible. (p.130)

Trust

For Christopher, the concept of trust is black and white — either it is there or it is not. He trusts only his parents and his teacher, and cannot trust anyone he does not know. He has virtually no contact with anyone else. But, in time, he comes to trust Mrs. Alexander.

Christopher had trusted his father to deal with him truthfully because he had no reason nor experience to expect otherwise. But Christopher’s father has broken his trust with Christopher when he admits to killing the dog. He also confesses to and is remorseful about lying to Christopher about his mother.

While Christopher’s dad expresses his regrets and promises never to do such a thing again, his admission lies in the place where trust is not black and white, but has shades of grey. Christopher is not equipped to deal with shades of grey and so is distraught by his father’s lies.
